SEX

Sex refers to the biological and physiological characteristics of males and females, different from gender which refers to the socially constructed characteristics of women and men. My collection, Sex, is a clash between the two sexes we are given at birth and are confined to dress by in according to societies standards. By mixing both feminine and masculine formal wear on both male and female models, I strive to make the audience uncomfortable with my work. When we see things we aren’t yet adapt to, we tend to fear or distaste the outcome. In reality though sex shouldn’t have as strong a grip on fashion as it currently does. Instead we should start moving towards a gender neutral fashion industry that allows others to dress off taste and style rather than sex and gender. For my color palette I chose light and pink delicate fabrics for my feminine garments, and for my masculine garments I choose rougher dark fabrics. The colors and textures in this collection only work to emphasize the dissonance. Another key element were my models. For my models I chose an assortment of different and unique people from both genders and even a model from a whole different generation to further express the impact of my study.
